The Reiki Practitioners Journey: Remembering to Practice for Yourself

Oct 13
2 min read

When we first begin our Reiki journey, much of our attention is focused on learning, practicing, and experiencing Reiki for ourselves. We discover the importance of self-care, develop a daily practice, and begin to recognize the subtle ways Reiki becomes part of our everyday lives.

As we continue our training and begin offering Reiki to others, something can gradually shift. Our attention may become focused on helping others, preparing for sessions, learning new techniques, or growing our practice.

But somewhere along the way, we may forget one of the most important aspects of Reiki: our own practice.

Reiki Begins With Us

One of the things I emphasize with my students is that Reiki is not simply something we offer to others. It is a practice we live.

The teachings of Mikao Usui remind us of the importance of personal growth, mindfulness, and daily practice. The Five Reiki Precepts encourage us to examine how we approach life, our relationships, and ourselves.

Reiki is not about becoming a perfect practitioner. It is about continuing to learn, remaining present, and recognizing that our own healing and growth are ongoing.

Whether you have been practicing Reiki for a few months or many years, there is always something to discover.

Returning to Your Daily Practice

Your personal Reiki practice does not need to be complicated or time-consuming.

Some days, you may have time for a full self-Reiki session. Other days, your practice might simply involve sitting quietly in Gassho, reflecting on the Five Precepts, or practicing Hatsurei-ho.

What matters is making the time to reconnect with yourself.

I encourage my students to approach their daily practice without expectations. Rather than focusing on what they should feel or experience, simply allow themselves to be present.

We do not need to force an outcome. Sometimes the most meaningful part of our practice is simply giving ourselves permission to be still.

We Are Always Students

After many years of practicing and teaching Reiki, I continue to consider myself a student.

Every experience, every teacher, and every opportunity to practice offers something different.

Sometimes I learn something new, and sometimes I am reminded of something I already know but may have overlooked.

I believe maintaining this openness is an important part of being a Reiki practitioner.

Our training does not end when we receive a certificate or complete another level of Reiki. In many ways, that is where the deeper practice begins.

A Space for Continued Learning and Connection

I created The Reiki Practitioner's Journey as a place to share reflections, traditional Reiki teachings, practical guidance, and encouragement for those who have chosen to walk this path.

My hope is that these articles will encourage you to explore your own practice, ask questions, and continue developing your relationship with Reiki.

There is no finish line on this journey. We continue to learn, grow, and deepen our understanding through experience.

And sometimes, the most important thing we can do as practitioners is return to where we began—with ourselves.

A Reflection for You

When was the last time you gave yourself the same attention, care, and presence that you so willingly offer others?

Perhaps today is a good day to begin again.

With gratitude,
