What is Reiki?

Updated: Mar 27

Reiki can be difficult to explain and understand. 20 years ago, I was the one trying to understand the word; how to pronounce it, how to spell it, question after question. However, Reiki is becoming more and more main stream which has been no small feat, but slowly but surely, the great white light is getting stronger.

With Japanese origins, Reiki is a complementary energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, stress reduction, and anxiety through the use of touch.

Rei means, universal spirit, high power

Ki means, vital life force energy

Reiki is Guided Life Force Energy or Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living beings. Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and in helping others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free-flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

Reiki is a great tool for stress reduction and relaxation and is a complement to traditional medicine and is practiced in hospitals and medical care settings.

In my experience as a Practitioner, more oft than not, once someone has experienced Reiki, they want to understand more about it and experience more of it.

In a recent Harvard University Study where 1411 Reiki sessions were conducted and included in the analysis. The results from this large scale multi-site effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves physical and psychological health. There was significant improvements observed including pain, drowsiness, tiredness, shortness of breath, anxiety, nausea, depression, mood, and overall well-being. In just ONE session! I was thrilled with the results when they came out. It wasn't anything I didn't already know but it was nice to see that a prestigious school such Harvard would conduct the research with such a amazing results. (The Center for Reiki Research)

My Motto: The best way to understand reiki is to Experience Reiki.

When I am asked "What is Reiki?" I usually say, "a type of energy healing". Then, depending on the look on their face, I attempt to offer further explanations from what I said above. I may reference the Harvard Study but if they have absolutely no idea what I am talking about I will almost always say, "The best way to understand Reiki is to Experience Reiki". It is really the best way to begin to understand its transformative power.

My First Reiki Experience

The first time I experienced Reiki was the most relaxed I had ever felt in my life. Massages are amazing for relaxation, but in my case, it was often times painful. I carry a lot of tension in my neck, shoulders and lower back and upper thighs - basically my entire back. So, most massages were deep tissue and painful, but I did experience moments of relaxation and I always appreciate it. The relaxation I felt during my Reiki session was an internal relaxation. My soul literally felt at rest which was something I most certainly had never felt before, at least on a conscious level. While driving home after the experience, I ran into a rain storm that turned into a hail storm which forced those of us on the highway to pull over until it passed. While watching the hail size grow bigger and bigger while bouncing off of my car, I started to go into panic mode wondering what damage would be done to my car, but something shifted, and I felt nothing but peace, love and calm. It was wonderful. Those 5 minutes or so, while waiting for the storm to pass, I knew I wanted to find out more about Reiki and that I definitely wanted receive more of it. and so, Reiki journey began.

Reiki is not a religion. Many people of different faiths use Reiki for what it is .... a complementary healing art. Reiki is not witchcraft or voodoo. Reiki is Love in its simplest form.

If you haven't already, get on a table and give Reiki a try. It might just be the best thing you have done for yourself. It was for me.
